The study of any instrument requires practice and more so when learning to play the keyboard. It is the same no matter what activity you take up that requires complex motor skills. But still... there is a difference between practice and exercise.
There are right and wrong ways of practicing the keyboard or any musical instrument you choose to play. Every musician knows that there has to be a lot of practice and this requires a great deal of repetition. It is the way your practice that makes a difference in the way you learn to play the piano or keyboard and this is what will determine whether you will be a proficient player or a dismal one.
No matter what motor skill you are developing in whatever activity you take up, it is practice and not exercise that requires training. It is not how long you practice but more importantly how you practice. When your techniques are incorrect, even non-stop practice will not make you a better player, rather the opposite.
Studies at Northwestern University Medical School in the U.S. have defined exercise as a repetitious performance of an already learned act, while practice differs slightly as in it is the performance of an act while taking into account spatial and temporal organization of the activity.
In other words, practice makes changes to the brain and nervous system as well as exercising the needed muscles. To attain this change repetition has to occur but it must differ in some way from the previous repetition.
When you actively practice the piano or keyboard you must involve your brain and analyze every repetition as you do it. This way you will improve as the next repetition comes along, instead of just repeating the same mistakes.
As a piano or keyboard student you have to focus on what you are doing and find ways to make whatever you are practicing more efficient during keyboard lessons. There are thousands of small ways that a passage can be repeated and improved on.
This is where the right keyboard teacher can help. He will be able to make you a better player with just two hours of effective keyboard lessons. The teacher will show you the skills you need, show you where you are making the mistake, and how to improve the technique.
Teaching a student to become committed to practice is not as easy as it looks. Teaching is much like parenting, and its not only about obedience and control, but its about developing a students own musical abilities.
A teacher, therefore, must be able to draw a line between doing things for the student and allowing him to learn things for himself so that when left alone, he can still remember what he learned from you. He must be able to know the right things to say, how to be critical without hurting feelings and how to properly motivate his students to finish the Singapore keyboard lessons and to continue practicing.
