Whether a person can control their blood sugar levels will go a long way in determining if one is going to gain weight, especially dreaded belly fat. It will also greatly influence how a person feels because it has everything to do with your energy levels throughout the day.

Not binging on sugary snacks or junk food in general is a good start to controlling blood sugar levels as is getting proper exercise on a routine basis.

There are also two nutrients that are essential in managing your glucose metabolism. And beyond that they can help turn you into a fat and carb burning machine that will help you burn off what you eat, instead of storing it as fat on your belly (belly fat, the curse of both men and women), hips and thighs.

These nutrients that I'm referring to are biotin and chromium and they are vital in controlling blood sugar.

Biotin is from the B complex family of vitamins and it makes your body more efficient at using its glucose (simple sugar) supplies. Biotin is the starting point that sets glucose metabolism in motion. If the process works slowly or not at all it is inevitable that you will gain fat. As an added bonus biotin helps make you feel more energetic and it helps make your hair thicker and nails stronger.

It is good to take a B-complex supplement, which would normally contain biotin and you can add extra biotin as well. Some good food sources of biotin are nuts, egg yolks, liver and fish.

Chromium is a vital mineral that really aids the actions of insulin. Insulin, of course, is the hormone that regulates blood sugar. After you eat and your body starts absorbing sugar into the blood, insulin is released into the blood stream from the pancreas. In simple terms what insulin does is tells the cells to open up and let the sugar in. This fuels your metabolism and keeps your energy levels even.

Problems occur when the cells are slow to respond. That can happen if you are sick or under a lot of stress or eating too many carbohydrates. Then you body releases more insulin and cells become resistant to the insulin signal and that is when you start gaining fat and storing it wherever your body has a propensity to store it. For many of us that means more belly fat.

Excellent food sources of chromium are beef, chicken, eggs and dairy products as well as many fruits and vegetables.

In terms of supplements, biotin and chromium are a powerful combination in controlling blood sugar. By using them you can help prevent those big dips in energy that many people experience. Of course, even before the supplements it is important to not binge on carbs. And as always, exercise plays a vital role in energy levels and fat control.
